Information about Judging

Do you want to be a contest judge? The information and links below can help you learn how to be an effective contest judge.

Judges don't just cast a yes/no vote for a winner. Judging a contest involves looking at various categories depending on the speech and assigning a point system to each category. The sum of the points for each category is used to determine how the judge casts a ballot. Click here to see the point system and categories for the four contests.

Toastmasters holds four contests per year. Tthe Evaluation and Humorous contests are held in the fall. The Tall Tales and International Speech contests are held in the spring. If you are going to judge an Evaluation contest here is some advice for you..

The Chief Judge needs to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility and Originality from each contestant. This usually is obtained well in advance from the area governor.
